Learning to Drive
Anyone want to take a guess what is wrong with this picture? Take a closer look at the steering wheel. And take another look at the car turning in front of me – looks like he is going in the wrong direction.
That’s right (or is it “left”). Singapore used to be a British colony, so that means there is no more driving on the right side of the road.
Sounds easy, no?
Well, even though I am 43 years old, I pretty much have drifted away from driving when I am home. In fact, the truck I bought ten years ago – I would be hard pressed to say it even has 70,000 miles on it. And while that sounds like a lot, I am pretty sure it had no more than 60,000 miles when I started working international 5 years ago.
Why’s that? Because whenever I am home, I stay at home. When I go out, it’s with my family – whether going to Church, or going to the oriental restraint (think I was prepping myself for work here?), Karen does all (and I mean “ALL”) the driving.
So I am having to relearn how to drive.
And to top it off – I am in a foreign country, where my office is 28 kilometres away from my condo, and I have no idea where the AYE and PIE and the CTI go. I just know this: Singapore is an island, so as long as I don’t cross over any bridges, I really can’t get lost.
Well, at least if I do, I know I am still in the same country!
