How Home is Like Duck Dynasty

I began watching Duck Dynasty a few months ago. Being the southern girl that I am, I love it! This family reminds me of my family a lot.

See, my dad is Phil. How fitting is that? My dad is a strong Christian man. And, he can fix almost anything. What he can't fix, he knows where to take it. :)

Now, don't worry. My dad is clean shaven and cannot stand going over six weeks without a haircut. His hairdresser has him on a regular schedule for that. My dad doesn't hunt, but could if he had to. He still has a garden. He, also, knows good food. He even cooks a lot! I miss my daddy's cooking so much.

My mom is not as "endowed" in body as Miss Kay, but she is down to earth just like her. She has that sweet smile, also. Most people fall in love with her pretty quick. She has been known to be an "adopted" aunt/mom to many a newcomer to the small town they live in.

Her kitchen is sort of similar to this. She taught me how to make homemade dumplings, cake, cookies, etc....

And I have one of the most awesome uncle's ever. He has a beard, but it is short. But he has a wit about him. Everyone who meets him loves him! He is a lot like Uncle Si. I think that might be why he is one of my favorite characters!

I have a brother-in-law who is a cross between Willie and Jase. He loves his boats and ATV's like Willie, but he hunts like Jase.

Now, I'm not sure who Martin and Godwin are like. There are many guys I know like them. I just have to laugh at them because they are so much like the guys I grew up with.....hard working with a sense of humor....and haven't lost their sense of "fun".

I do pray that I will be like Miss Kay. She is such a godly woman who is giving and loving to her family and the community around her.

So, here's to Duck Dynasty. I am just praying they can point more people to God through their show and not get caught up in fame and fortune. I'm pretty sure Phil will make sure that doesn't happen. I admire so much that they are still living in the same house for years. They are down to earth, despite their riches.

It is hard to explain expat life to someone who has never experienced it.

You move to a foreign country where you know no one.....and I mean NO ONE! Then you enroll your child in a school where you have no idea who the teachers are kin to or who they taught in the past. And then, you run the risk of no restaurants serving sweet tea! Talk about culture shock!

We have been lucky enough to move into a foreigners compound. We have people from all countries and all walks of life here. Needless to say, I am one of the few who grew up in the country in South Mississippi.

I wear my "Southern Belle" shirts, one of which says 'Hey Ya'll' on the back. I don't worry too much about manicures and pedicures. I don't have a maid or a nanny. I don't even have a car.

When my family tells folks that I am in South Korea, they automatically think I am on the mission field. That is not totally false.

Yes, we are here with my husband's job, which is on a project team building drillships. But we knew God was up to something when He led us to take this job.

We have been able to help continue a student Christian club at our son's school which was started by a precious couple from South Africa who were teachers here.
We now help with the children's church with a worship group here on the compound.  We are able to interact with so many people on a daily basis.

My reason for this blog is this:

I could have viewed this move as one of the worst things in life. Yes, I miss my family terribly, both in Mississippi and Texas. I miss sweet tea, fried catfish, strawberries year around, Pam cooking spray, Crisco shortening, an array of canned and frozen veggies, and a cheap gallon of ice cream. I miss driving my own car. I miss knowing the language. I miss my friends. I miss my church.

But, God has blessed me beyond measure here....
He called me here for a purpose....or maybe many purposes. I just have to be willing to be used. And, I can see my husband more that 3 months out of the year.

What could be better than to follow God's leading?

I am now taking Korean class. I have several friends I can call on to help me interpret for me. I have become part of a new family here. I can be used to help others who are new here. I can help them feel like family.

So, no matter what situation God has you in.....He calls you to be content in whatever season you are in. He loves you and cares for you more than you can ever imagine.

Let Him use you in this season of life. I'm sure not going to let this season pass and miss what He could have done here in Korea...I want to be a part of it! :)
